About Movie Colony

The Movie Colony is one of the most well-known residential neighborhoods in Palm Springs, CA. In fact, no conversation regarding the neighborhoods of Palm Springs would be complete with discussing the Movie Colony. Named for the by-gone days when Hollywood stars flocked to the desert oasis of Palm Springs and built their bungalows, cottages and estates – the Movie Colony today still retains the charm and allure of yesteryear. The Movie Colony is where you will find the big estates of former Hollywood moguls and legendary movie stars, such as Cary Grant, Jack Benny, Gloria Swanson, David O. Selznick, Darryl F. Zanuck and Harry Cohn.

Today, the Movie Colony neighborhood consists of around 170 homes and offers an assortment of 1920s and 1930s Spanish villas, Mid-Century Modern and California ranch-style architecture. Manicured ficus tree hedge walls screen from view many of the Movie Colony homes which makes for a very private setting. Since entertaining was, and still is, a major part of the Hollywood lifestyle that was transplanted to Palm Springs in the 1920s and 1930s, many of the homes in the Movie Colony feature private casitas or guest quarters.
